$40 date: Dive Bar Delightful Night

My latest $40 comes from a weekend getaway to New Orleans. I was traveling to the Crescent City to celebrate the 25th anniversary of my Gamma Phi Beta chapter being on the Loyola campus. Although there to see sorority sisters I also wanted to spend some time enjoying the city with the bf so we had a late dinner Friday night at one of my favorite places: Port of Call

Port of Call is basically a pirate themed dive bar, and usually that is not my thing but honestly, I just don't think a trip to Nola is complete without a visit. There's also a pirate themed dive bar in Memphis and I've only been once so that's not the attraction - it might be the fond college memories, the dark and mysterious ambiance, or just the fact that the food is really good - it's probably a combination of these. Seriously though, it's so dark inside I couldn't get an ambiance picture for y'all. Beyond not spending a fortune going out the point of $40 dating is to get creative and …

Lunch at Lilly 2014

So I had every intention of posting my usual Fashion Find Friday post last week but sometimes the best of intentions get misplaced. As I was riding along with the bf to New Orleans last Friday I remembered that reading in the car gives me a headache and it was in my best interest to hold off on blogging. This week's post will be all about some NOLA fun but first I'll do a little fashion catch up.
Recently Lilly Pulutzer had their annual Lunch at Lilly event and although I intended to be strong I wound up with a few things.

L@L is an annual promotion to promote the Spring collection by offering gifts with purchase. In the past gifts have focused on one of the spring prints and spring activities. 2013 offered napkins, a table cloth and cooler in the Chin Chin print while 2012 offered gifts leading up to a picnic basket. This year the emphasis was all about accessories:

During the day several stores ran out of these gifts, which I found …

$40 Date Health Conscious Happy Hour

Recently I met up with a friend after work at the newly opened Seasons 52. I was surprised to see at 5:50pm on a Tuesday the parking lot was packed. Since I was in a rush to make it to be bar before 6pm I skipped the complementary valet and dashed inside. At 5:58pm I received this menu, 2 minutes to spare SCORE!

I usually drink white wine but admit to being very tempted to give the reds or the acclaimed a try. I wound up going with my usual and a few minutes later was brought three 2-oz pours of wine.

I really like how each glass was labeled, least I forget which one was my favorite. My friend was curious about the moscato as it wasn't overly sweet so she wound up taking that tag home. Two thumbs up on the tagging.

While waiting for the flatbread to arrive we were treated to a pianist / singer. I love how he's in the middle of the bar. I also love that instead of playing classical he sang top 40 songs; not that I don't like classical but it was very upbeat and fun with…

$40 date Sushi

I love me some sushi! It's not really something I think of as an affordable date option, I've been known to run up $80 sushi tabs. But, with a little research in finding the right location, a partner with agreeable taste and a little strategy it can be done.
The largest expenses for a business are typically payroll and rent, but since servers make so little in the restaurant industry you can be sure rent is the biggest expense. So, if you go to the part of town where the rents are lower you can find that there's better pricing on the menu. My favorite sushi spot in Memphis just happens to be next to a strip club. It's actually nice inside, and the neighborhood is not scary.
The interior:

This place is usually pretty quiet, when we arrived there were five other tables but they had all cleared out by the time we finished. I really don't understand why.
The sushi prices are very reasonable:

When Shaun and I go here we always split a pot of tea and get waters. T…

Beauty Review: Younique 3D lashes

Lots of people have been posting about the lash extending mascara craze so I just has to get on it. I just loved getting false eyelashes attached but it was very time consuming, and a little uncomfortable. I read somewhere that long lush lashes can make you look young and I must say I agree.
These pics are from last summer a week apart before and after false lashes:
I just feel like I look "fresher" post lashes.
So when a FB friend posted about younique I was very intrigued, could I get the same look without gluing on false lashes? The fact that the product was on back order was already a good sign of the popularity but it didn't take too long to arrive. The product was packaged securely and comes in its own hard case.

It's fairly simple to use: one swipe of regular mascara, one swipe of younique gel, one swipe of fibers, repeat the gel and fibers a 2nd time and a final swipe of gel to "set" the fibers. To test my results I took 3 pictures, one with no…

Fashion Find Friday - Facebook flash sale

When I got home last night I was super excited to see that a necklace I ordered Monday night had arrived. It took me three tries to get this necklace so it was a much anticipated arrival.  On Facebook I follow two sites that offer weekly jewelry and accessory flash sales, one of which is the Pink Silhouette, which I wear this necklace came from. I knew exactly how I wanted to style it the second I saw the stock photo, with my Lilly Pop! Murfee, which y'all know I wear as a top. Here it is on me and against the print.

So the flash sales offer a limited quantity of goods. The Pink Silhouette also offers super cute clothing in boutique sizes, ie not for size 16 / 18 MandySue : ( but here's some examples of the super cute stuff I'd eventually like to fit:

I've got too much random jewelry hanging around my house to show you everything I've gotten from this site but this necklace and bracelet set comes to mind because I get lots of compliments on it.

MandySue Time

Sometimes I like a little alone time. When I've been single this had been easy enough to come by - just don't make plans one night. But when spending a lot of time with ones significant other, be it dating, living together or married the alone time is a little harder to come by but still very important. So when my book club was canceled last night I knew just what I wanted - some special time to myself.
Now don't get me wrong, there are night when I come home to only my two dogs and I grab a quick meal before doing more work, a little laundry and then head to bed but this is not the kind of alone time Im talking about. Last night I went to fresh market and picked up some of my favorite goodies (and a $25 tab, grr) came home and made a tray, put on my silk jammies, watched a chick flick and did a honey facial mask. Ahhh!
Here's the tray I made up:

Notice how I didn't use any plastic or paper products. My mother would not have approved of using crystal on such a …

In The Bag : Makeup

A few weeks ago I showed what I carry around in my purse. This week we're taking a look inside my makeup bag. This bag is from the Dillard's GWP, it's a Lilly print.

As you can see, I have a wide variety of brands represented.
Foundation - E.L.F., my actual preference is Heather ( a brand in Memphis) but I lost it so this is my temporary hold over. Not bad for a cheap brand  Blush - Hard Candy, one of those four in one blended boxes. This is a cheap knockoff of the benefit offerings, I will not purchase again. I do like the Benefit Dallas  Power - Arbone from a silent auction basket  Eyeshadow - Estée Lauder in the GWP  Lipstick - Estée Lauder in the GWP  Eyeliner - Estée Lauder , was a purchase to get the GWP  Mascara - Estée Lauder in the GWP, I never buy mascara since its always in someone's GWP and they dry up so quickly
Here's a look inside the eyeshadow pallet:

The reason I show these eye shadows is because they're perfect to get the "lilly look…

$40 Date - Happy Hour Delight

A friend tipped me off on a secret two years ago that I'm sharing with you today:  Flemming's offers a 5 - 6 - 7 happy hour in the bar area. Five cocktails, five wines and five appetizers for $6 until 7pm.  And they do mean bar area, no dining room no patio.

The bar looking into the restaurant:  There are five booths in this area so you either need to get there at 5pm or come at 6pm when the early crowd turns over. A small half wall separates you from the $50 steak high rollers.
The bar area:

We sat at a bistro table in front of the wine cellar , this is a bit of a high traffic area so it's not preferred. We got there at 5:30 and it was the last table left.

The menu:

The drinks are actually $6.90, which I think is a bit deceiving but hey, they've got to make their money somewhere. Sodas are $3.50 each.
Our food selections, baked Brie, tenderloin carpaccio, prime burger and salt & pepper shrimp:
All were delicious, and we could have done with only three.
So t…

$40 dates - Fancy but Frugal

Today I am starting a new series of posts: $40 Dates
Lets face it, dating can be expensive. Personally I feel women have fought really hard for equality in the work place but we need to take that equality beyond work if we're not going to be a bunch of hypocrites - and ladies, that means when it comes to going out on dates its time to pay up and share the costs. But regardless of who pays I just don't think a night out should be a big financial burden. It's really important for couples to spend time doing fun things together! I'd love to say I'm able to keep all my date nights under $40 but the reality is that is really hard, but it can be done. So without further adieu, here's the first of hopefully many $40 (and under) dates.
One of the best ways to save on dating is to think outside the going out to dinner box. Especially if you're like me and you prefer dressing up and going to nice places. So instead of dinner, why not a dessert and drinks date? Mos…

Fashion Find Friday - Nola Lilly Love

Happy Fashion Find Friday y'all!  As y'all know, I have abit of a thing for Lilly Pultizer Murfee scarfs. This is my current collection:
Ah, these scarfs make me so happy. Sometimes I feel like a collector carefully curating a collection. Over the past two years I've swapped out a lot of scarfs, there's at least 10 I've had at one point no longer here. But I know there's a fine line from collection to obsession, which is why I have capped myslef at 20. Right now I have 19 (technically 16, 2 riley loops and 1 wrap) so I'm really careful about adding to the collection. My big problem is I really love most of the ones I currently have, so swapping out is going to be very difficult. I recently sold a popular in demand print I just didn't love so I could add my latest and today's fashion find, the Louisiana /New Orleans print murfee. Here's the print:

So much going on with this scarf, and I love the color scheme. This print is a limited edition comm…

Lilly Pulitzer for Estée Lauder

Last week I showed off my new makeup bag I was using as a clutch and some of y'all have expressed interest so I have a few more details to share.
In the past, Estée Lauder and Lilly Pulitzer ran a collaboration to have Lilly Pulitzer prints on makeup bags to be used as Estée Lauder gift with purchase sets. During the summer they also had Lilly prints on GWP totes. This collaboration was obviously successful because its back for another in 2014. Currently Macy's in hosting the GWP through March 23rd. Here's a stock photo of the $35 purchase GWP:

Please note you'll get to choose one compact and one lipstick. If you spend $70 you'll also get a pocket mirror, another lipstick, lip conditioner, concealer, and a lip gloss. I selected a bottle of the new Modern Muse perfume as my purchase for $78 so I got all the girls, here's my haul (my concealer / lip gloss wand is missing):

Ever since Clinique did away with the turnaround cream I've been on the prowl for a…
