On Wednesdays We Wear Pink!

Happy Wednesday y'all! Are you wearing pink? I am.

Can you believe Mean Girls came out today 10 years ago? That makes us old y'all. I know the first time watching this movie was with my sorority sisters at a beach retreat but I can't even tell you how many times I've watched it since then, let's just say a lot. Some of the stars of that movie have done really well, others have kinda disappeared, and some well, not so much. But I'm not really one for discussing celebrities so in honor of the 10 year anniversary I have 10 lessons that I learned from Mean Girls, so listen up biotches . . . .

1. You can only wear your hair in a ponytail once a week

Ok, so the "mean girls" might be a little image obsessed but in general I like the idea of not dressing casual too often. At most offices jeans are  only allowed once a week which is also a mean girls fashion rule. There's nothing wrong with being a little casual once in a while but if you're looking to reflect an image of polish and poise don't make it your regular thing.

2. Never dumb yourself down for a guy

Cady almost loses her chance with Aaron because she pretends to suck at math, and that's just dumb. True story: I went on a date with a guy who asked me if I knew that in a corporate liquidation bond holders receive a distribution with precedence over stock holders. My answer: yes. This guy was apparently trying to be super impressive with this fancy (not really) knowledge and got pretty upset about this, but as I pointed out I have a Master's in Finance so yes I'm aware of the pro and cons of various forms of investment. It was our 2nd and last date. Point being yes ladies, there will be guys out there who can't handle you being smart but those aren't the kind of guys worth your time.

3. Don't write things down you don't want coming back to you

Always talk face to face first if you have a problem with someone. I know lots of people, myself included, who sent a bad email that should have never been sent. It's ok to get mad, get hurt and maybe be a little crazy but cool off and then approach the issue because once you put something negative out there it's there and it has to be addressed.

4. Don't say mean things over the phone

You never know who is listening or recording you. It's sad but true (side eye to Donald Sterling). So again, talk face to face. On that note, be carefully gossiping in public, you never know who knows who.

5. Butter does in fact have carbs

Shortcuts really don't create long term positive results. At almost 30 I'm still trying to accept this one when it comes to dieting vs healthy lifestyle choices. It would be nice to say oh, I'm going to only eat these protein bars for a month and viola meet my goals but that's just not how the body works.

6. The real you is always better than you trying to be someone else

Probably one of my favorite scenes is when Regina has holes cut in her tank top, wears it anyway and sparks a trend. Everyone looks so silly you can't help but laugh out loud. But then at prom Cady gives her moving speech about everyone looking so great - when the girls focus on being the best version of themselves rather than copying the popular girl is when they really look, and more importantly feel, good. Ok, and a little piece of the prom queen crown doesn't hurt.

7. If you focus on negativity too much it will become a part of you

At once point Cady becomes a "mean girl" herself. She spends so much time focused on Regina she becomes just like her. Someone you don't like isn't worth that much of your time and energy because the negativity will grow within your heart and will take you, so don't let it in.

8. Carelessness hurts others

When Cady's party causes her mother's tribal vase to be lost her mother is really upset. As yes, it's not like Cady went and smashed it to pieces  but actions have consequences , sometimes negative ones. And the vase is found but it's not about that, it's about lying to the parents and showing disrespect for their home. A careless action that only takes a moment to make can take a long time to heal, choose your words, and your actions carefully.

9. Girlfriends are awesome, but women can also be a little crazy

In the end, friendship wins but Cady is comparing the rituals of teen girls to animals in the wild all throughout the movie and it's funny because it's true. Love your friends like they deserve to be loved but also watch out for the crazy.

10. You can always reinvent yourself

I know people who are stuck in the idea of who they were in high school - I graduated 12 years ago. That's a long time to hold onto something that may or may not still be true. So what if you were a nerd in high school, or a jock or even a "mean girl". In life we get to move on, become someone different in college or as an adult. Unless you commit a major crime chances are what you did at 16 or even 22 won't make who you are at 30. Youth is the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and become a better person for them.

So, wow lots of deep life lessons from a "silly movie" as some think it is. There's plenty of other good stuff in this movie but these are just 10 things I could think of. So happy anniversary Mean Girls and happy we wear pink day to all you you.

Love ya! Bye.

$40 Date at Old Dominick

Lately I've been turning Friday into finance Friday around here and while budgeting and spending appropriately is all super important I think it's important for y'all to know that being financially responsible isn't all excel , numbers and paperwork. So, I'm resurrecting a series I used to post here - $40 Dates! The idea is pretty simple - every couple needs a date night (or afternoon) whether you're newly dating or married with five kids and a date night doesn't always have to mean getting dressed up and having an expensive dinner - in fact I think the best way to keep your dates fun and stress free is by making sure they're not a financial burden, because date night shouldn't be put on the back burner either. It's been a few years since I started this concept and when I told myself I need to do better about date night in my own marriage I seriously considered upping the spend to $50 but here's the deal - $40 is super easy and it's a …

Birthday Discounts

Woohoo! It's my birthday week y'all! Birthdays are always a great time for brands to make customers special and each year I'm able to take advantage of some pretty good discounts in July so I thought I would share the love and talk about some of my favorite discounts and how to get them.

My absolute favorite discount is from Kendra Scott! During your birthday month you can receive one regular item at 50% off. It's your first time you'll have to show your id in store and sign up for their email list but then once they have you on file you can just go into the store and say that you would like to apply your birthday discount to your purchase and give your email address. This year I purchased the Tatiana Long Pendant Necklace which usually sells for $175. This necklace takes the look of the popular Rayne necklace and really amps it up.
If jewelry is your thing you can also get a $10 credit from Charming Charlie - this discount is sent to Charm Rewards members at the…

Body Confidence

I have people tell me a lot that "I'm so confident" with such a tone of surprise and while really I think it's just that I'm a plus size women who happens to be loud and doesn't try to hide from the world but sometimes if I'm in a sensitive mood I'll take that as umm, don't you own a mirror, you should maybe be quiet and go to the gym. I'd say about 90% of the time I can say although I don't have my ideal body I don't hate myself and I don't let it keep me from living my life but then there's that 10% of the time . . .

Last week I had such a moment, You may have noticed that my pics I post on social media are either of me standing or are chest up if I'm sitting - now this is partially because I typically only take pics seated if I'm showing off a product so I was a more close up anyway but also here's something this people never have to think about - when you're plus size and you sit down if consolidates all t…

Brahmin Saddle Creek Grand Opening

Earlier this month the new Brahmin store opened at The Shops of Saddle Creek and Memphis could not have been more excited! I arrived right before the doors opened and there was already a crowd formed ready to explore all the goodies inside. Brahmin provided some delicious champagne punch to toast to the grand opening and it wasn't too long after the doors opened that the store was completely full - it took me 1/2 an hour to check out that's how popular the grand opening was! But enough talk, they say a picture is worth a 1,000 words so I'm keeping the text on this post brief and just letting y'all see all the fun inside. Summer 2018 Collection on display right as you walk in   Yummy snacks provided by Brahmin  As you can see, it was very crowded inside The belt bag - can be worn three ways

Southern Living Idea House

The week AFTER I got back from Nashville over the summer from my sorority annual trip I received my August Southern Living with the Southern Living Idea House for this year . . . Located in Nashville, TN. So annoying! Sorry sisters that I wasn't on top of knowing about this. However, since I only live 3 hours away I was able to visit.
The house is on the Fontanel property northwest of nashville , not too far from town but secluded. Once it closes for Southern  Living tours it will re-open February 7th as The Inn at Fontanel.
Due to the cold weather, they had a tented walkway so we couldn't get an outdoor pic, this photo is from southern living.com :

Lets head inside . . .  (PS: please appreciate my dedication to sharing the house with you, I usually do not like posting public pics sans makeup)
Upon entry besides being greeted by a beautiful very large and open living room we were welcomed by a lady staffing the house. She was very nice to take our picture by the gorgeous t…
