On Wednesdays We Wear Pink!

Happy Wednesday y'all! Are you wearing pink? I am.

Can you believe Mean Girls came out today 10 years ago? That makes us old y'all. I know the first time watching this movie was with my sorority sisters at a beach retreat but I can't even tell you how many times I've watched it since then, let's just say a lot. Some of the stars of that movie have done really well, others have kinda disappeared, and some well, not so much. But I'm not really one for discussing celebrities so in honor of the 10 year anniversary I have 10 lessons that I learned from Mean Girls, so listen up biotches . . . .

1. You can only wear your hair in a ponytail once a week

Ok, so the "mean girls" might be a little image obsessed but in general I like the idea of not dressing casual too often. At most offices jeans are  only allowed once a week which is also a mean girls fashion rule. There's nothing wrong with being a little casual once in a while but if you're looking to reflect an image of polish and poise don't make it your regular thing.

2. Never dumb yourself down for a guy

Cady almost loses her chance with Aaron because she pretends to suck at math, and that's just dumb. True story: I went on a date with a guy who asked me if I knew that in a corporate liquidation bond holders receive a distribution with precedence over stock holders. My answer: yes. This guy was apparently trying to be super impressive with this fancy (not really) knowledge and got pretty upset about this, but as I pointed out I have a Master's in Finance so yes I'm aware of the pro and cons of various forms of investment. It was our 2nd and last date. Point being yes ladies, there will be guys out there who can't handle you being smart but those aren't the kind of guys worth your time.

3. Don't write things down you don't want coming back to you

Always talk face to face first if you have a problem with someone. I know lots of people, myself included, who sent a bad email that should have never been sent. It's ok to get mad, get hurt and maybe be a little crazy but cool off and then approach the issue because once you put something negative out there it's there and it has to be addressed.

4. Don't say mean things over the phone

You never know who is listening or recording you. It's sad but true (side eye to Donald Sterling). So again, talk face to face. On that note, be carefully gossiping in public, you never know who knows who.

5. Butter does in fact have carbs

Shortcuts really don't create long term positive results. At almost 30 I'm still trying to accept this one when it comes to dieting vs healthy lifestyle choices. It would be nice to say oh, I'm going to only eat these protein bars for a month and viola meet my goals but that's just not how the body works.

6. The real you is always better than you trying to be someone else

Probably one of my favorite scenes is when Regina has holes cut in her tank top, wears it anyway and sparks a trend. Everyone looks so silly you can't help but laugh out loud. But then at prom Cady gives her moving speech about everyone looking so great - when the girls focus on being the best version of themselves rather than copying the popular girl is when they really look, and more importantly feel, good. Ok, and a little piece of the prom queen crown doesn't hurt.

7. If you focus on negativity too much it will become a part of you

At once point Cady becomes a "mean girl" herself. She spends so much time focused on Regina she becomes just like her. Someone you don't like isn't worth that much of your time and energy because the negativity will grow within your heart and will take you, so don't let it in.

8. Carelessness hurts others

When Cady's party causes her mother's tribal vase to be lost her mother is really upset. As yes, it's not like Cady went and smashed it to pieces  but actions have consequences , sometimes negative ones. And the vase is found but it's not about that, it's about lying to the parents and showing disrespect for their home. A careless action that only takes a moment to make can take a long time to heal, choose your words, and your actions carefully.

9. Girlfriends are awesome, but women can also be a little crazy

In the end, friendship wins but Cady is comparing the rituals of teen girls to animals in the wild all throughout the movie and it's funny because it's true. Love your friends like they deserve to be loved but also watch out for the crazy.

10. You can always reinvent yourself

I know people who are stuck in the idea of who they were in high school - I graduated 12 years ago. That's a long time to hold onto something that may or may not still be true. So what if you were a nerd in high school, or a jock or even a "mean girl". In life we get to move on, become someone different in college or as an adult. Unless you commit a major crime chances are what you did at 16 or even 22 won't make who you are at 30. Youth is the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and become a better person for them.

So, wow lots of deep life lessons from a "silly movie" as some think it is. There's plenty of other good stuff in this movie but these are just 10 things I could think of. So happy anniversary Mean Girls and happy we wear pink day to all you you.

Love ya! Bye.

Saying Goodbye

If we're friends on Facebook than you might have picked up on why I didn't blog last week - my grandmother passed away last Wednesday. I know I said I want to keep this blog focused on specific topics and less emotional one but the reality is I write it and while I have a whole list of topics I had planned on blogging last week and this week I feel like it's just not right. I still have a few "personal" posts up - my one about being motherless and childless had some readership over the past week being that Sunday was Mother's Day - and today I'm going to add one more personal post. As y'all know my husband and I are moving in June and I'm so glad that on our last "social" day together (we saw her several days in the hospital before she passed) we got to show my Grandma our new house. Our current condo isn't very wheelchair friendly so for the past few years we have been going out to eat on holidays and we were really excited to hos…

Hello Fresh Review

One problem with our last house was that the kitchen was a little small, but with our new kitchen we really have no excuse to not cook at home. To start us off on the right foot I started a Hello Fresh subscription.

Subscribers get to select from 8 meals on the weekly menu and can get two or four portions of each meal and 3, 4 or 5 meals per box. We get 4 meals and the cost of the box is $10 / portion / meal - so $80. Each menu also features one premium meal  for an extra $5 / portion.
For our first box I'm sharing step by step with two meals here because I don't think just showing one gives a fair overview of the box. Each box comes with the meat individually packaged, the ingredients per meal all in one brown bag and a recipe card that shows pictures, lists out materials needed and provides step by step instructions. It seems like all the meals involve six steps.

The first meal we made was a fish dish.

The first step was to roast the potatoes with oil in the oven.

Wardrobe Wednesday - Currently Craving

Although my clothing is mostly unpacked and hanging in the closet I still have all my shoes and accessories in boxes and although I purchased a few items in May as part of my Wardrobe Makeover blogging about them is going to have to wait another week. Today though instead of talking about what I have bought I thought I'd share a few items that I'd like to buy.
Society Plus Whimsy Bow Skirt $52.79 I love this skirt so much, which also comes in blush BTW, and I pretty much want to copy the entire look here. This skirt is named after the Whimsy and Wonder blog and the bow and length really matches my style. I feel like I already have a blush skirt so I should get the purple but I also feel like purple is better in fall and winter so I should wait to purchase. Sam Edelman Yumi Heeled Sandal $120 Mules are really in style right now and trend reports indicate this will carry into the fall. I had a nude pump on my wardrobe wish list for the year and I've yet to find one so I tho…

Sephora Play The Iconic Edition

In addition to my regular Play box this month I also received a special edition box exclusively available to Rouge VIB members for $20
This bag features six high end iconic beauty items and a style book. I got it mostly out of curiosity to try the products inside. Here's what's included: La Mer - The Moisturizing Soft Cream $170
This is one of the most famous (and expensive) skin creams in the world. It certainly smells nice and makes the skin feel soft and smooth. For the price point though I'd have to give the full sample jar a try to make a decision because $170 per ounce is a lot of money and I do like the moisturizer I use currently.
Guerlain Radiance Face Primer $74
Ok, so here's where I have a problem with this product - if I'm using an expensive moisturizer to give me "natural radiance" than why do I need a $74 primer to give me radiance? This goes on very smooth and does give a nice soft radiance but I feel like there are other products out there…

Sephora Play June 2017

This month's Sephora Play theme is all about summer and beauty products for summer. Here's what's inside my box this month:

VERB Sea Spray $7
This has a really nice scent to it but my hair is super straight and fine so I don't really have a use for a texturizing spray.

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk $10
Although I don't usually use dry shampoo I certainly don't mind receiving this - my scalp is pretty oily so sometimes in the summer I don't feel clean all day so this is great to stick in my purse for busy days when I feel like I need a little refresh.

Coola Makeup Setting Spray $36
On one hand I love that it's a makeup setting spray with SPF, on the other is smells like alcohol and sunblock (which is pretty much how most spray on sunblocks smell) At $36 I doubt I will be purchasing this product in the future.

Ka t Von D Liquid Lipstick $20
I really like the color and the pigmentation  and the formula is really nice - I really hate when lip products fe…
