On Wednesdays We Wear Pink!

Happy Wednesday y'all! Are you wearing pink? I am.

Can you believe Mean Girls came out today 10 years ago? That makes us old y'all. I know the first time watching this movie was with my sorority sisters at a beach retreat but I can't even tell you how many times I've watched it since then, let's just say a lot. Some of the stars of that movie have done really well, others have kinda disappeared, and some well, not so much. But I'm not really one for discussing celebrities so in honor of the 10 year anniversary I have 10 lessons that I learned from Mean Girls, so listen up biotches . . . .

1. You can only wear your hair in a ponytail once a week

Ok, so the "mean girls" might be a little image obsessed but in general I like the idea of not dressing casual too often. At most offices jeans are  only allowed once a week which is also a mean girls fashion rule. There's nothing wrong with being a little casual once in a while but if you're looking to reflect an image of polish and poise don't make it your regular thing.

2. Never dumb yourself down for a guy

Cady almost loses her chance with Aaron because she pretends to suck at math, and that's just dumb. True story: I went on a date with a guy who asked me if I knew that in a corporate liquidation bond holders receive a distribution with precedence over stock holders. My answer: yes. This guy was apparently trying to be super impressive with this fancy (not really) knowledge and got pretty upset about this, but as I pointed out I have a Master's in Finance so yes I'm aware of the pro and cons of various forms of investment. It was our 2nd and last date. Point being yes ladies, there will be guys out there who can't handle you being smart but those aren't the kind of guys worth your time.

3. Don't write things down you don't want coming back to you

Always talk face to face first if you have a problem with someone. I know lots of people, myself included, who sent a bad email that should have never been sent. It's ok to get mad, get hurt and maybe be a little crazy but cool off and then approach the issue because once you put something negative out there it's there and it has to be addressed.

4. Don't say mean things over the phone

You never know who is listening or recording you. It's sad but true (side eye to Donald Sterling). So again, talk face to face. On that note, be carefully gossiping in public, you never know who knows who.

5. Butter does in fact have carbs

Shortcuts really don't create long term positive results. At almost 30 I'm still trying to accept this one when it comes to dieting vs healthy lifestyle choices. It would be nice to say oh, I'm going to only eat these protein bars for a month and viola meet my goals but that's just not how the body works.

6. The real you is always better than you trying to be someone else

Probably one of my favorite scenes is when Regina has holes cut in her tank top, wears it anyway and sparks a trend. Everyone looks so silly you can't help but laugh out loud. But then at prom Cady gives her moving speech about everyone looking so great - when the girls focus on being the best version of themselves rather than copying the popular girl is when they really look, and more importantly feel, good. Ok, and a little piece of the prom queen crown doesn't hurt.

7. If you focus on negativity too much it will become a part of you

At once point Cady becomes a "mean girl" herself. She spends so much time focused on Regina she becomes just like her. Someone you don't like isn't worth that much of your time and energy because the negativity will grow within your heart and will take you, so don't let it in.

8. Carelessness hurts others

When Cady's party causes her mother's tribal vase to be lost her mother is really upset. As yes, it's not like Cady went and smashed it to pieces  but actions have consequences , sometimes negative ones. And the vase is found but it's not about that, it's about lying to the parents and showing disrespect for their home. A careless action that only takes a moment to make can take a long time to heal, choose your words, and your actions carefully.

9. Girlfriends are awesome, but women can also be a little crazy

In the end, friendship wins but Cady is comparing the rituals of teen girls to animals in the wild all throughout the movie and it's funny because it's true. Love your friends like they deserve to be loved but also watch out for the crazy.

10. You can always reinvent yourself

I know people who are stuck in the idea of who they were in high school - I graduated 12 years ago. That's a long time to hold onto something that may or may not still be true. So what if you were a nerd in high school, or a jock or even a "mean girl". In life we get to move on, become someone different in college or as an adult. Unless you commit a major crime chances are what you did at 16 or even 22 won't make who you are at 30. Youth is the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and become a better person for them.

So, wow lots of deep life lessons from a "silly movie" as some think it is. There's plenty of other good stuff in this movie but these are just 10 things I could think of. So happy anniversary Mean Girls and happy we wear pink day to all you you.

Love ya! Bye.

Blue Christmas

Last year I wrote about why I passed on the gratitude challenge (you can read it here) and at the end of the post I talked about how the Holiday season can be a struggle for many, and this year I want to expand more on that because y'all - I have been one of those many. The holiday season is a wonderful time of merriment and joy but I feel like there's a lot of pressure. Everyone is posting their happy joyful pics sending the message BE THANKFUL, BE JOYFUL, YOU ARE BLESSED - and yes I typed those in all caps on purpose because sometimes it feels like the world is yelling these things at us. If I'm being perfectly honest 95% of the time I am the person posting the happy, joyful pic but 5% of the time I don't feel thankful or joyful or blessed and then I feel like a complete garbage human for not feeling those things. I haven't had a serious period of depression in over six years but I've spent enough time being depressed that I know it when it happens and I ca…

Glamping in Northwest Arkansas

When Shaun and I were dating we used to go on several weekend getaways a year and while we've been on family vacations or weekend visits to my Dad's house we haven't taken a few days to get away and spend some time just the two of us since our honeymoon. Now, since we don't have kids you might be thinking isn't it always just you two, why do you need to get away but while it is just us two at home it's also jobs, and a mortgage and buying a lawn mower instead of paying a service - you know, adult responsibilities. One of the perks of fulfilling adult responsibilities though is every now and then you can afford to take a break. When we decided to make the five hour drive to the Lauren James sale I knew that I wanted to make a fun weekend rather than drive shop and drive home. Last time we drove to Fayetteville we saw advertisements for wineries in the area and since going to wineries is one of our favorite hobbies it was a no brainer and when researching the lo…

Essential Oil Make and Take

This year I've been doing a lot of homemade products and while it started off as being tired of running to the store for laundry detergent and face wash every few weeks its turned into more than that. As I researched and lookedup recipes   I started to discover that I could use homemade products for my health! I get migraines y'all and I will do ANYTHING to treat them. I've unsuccessful taken preventative medicine, destroyed my liver and stomach lining with OTC treatments for years, drained my bank account on prescription drugs, gone to the chiropractor, severally limited my alcohol and I still get them. My remaining options were: Botox, acupuncture, and moving to Colorado. But now I have hope. So where am I finding this hope? In essential oils.
I've spent the past month really looking into it and decided I have nothing to lose. So as I was looking into different brands a FB friend posted that she was having an Essential Oils 101 class and Make and Take - perfect timin…

Vi Peel

2018 Update: Hello Internet! Welcome to my most popular blog post - I presume you're here because you're considering getting a facial peel. Please keep in mind this is an old post and my photo quality is not great. Please feel free to read and enjoy but I do want to let you know that as the years have passed I have taken a more proactive approach with my skin care and I do not get frequent peels. If you'd like to see my modern approach to skincare check out some of my other beauty posts and I'd love for you to connect with me on Instagram to keep up with my latest and greatest recommendations.

Hello! So I got my first Vi Peel which I was super excited about. Since the Botox post was popular I figure y'all would like this too. Besides, it's well established I'm beyond any sense of privacy or shame here.
I got my first peel years ago - a mild Glycolic peel added onto my fac…

$40 dates - Fancy but Frugal

Today I am starting a new series of posts: $40 Dates
Lets face it, dating can be expensive. Personally I feel women have fought really hard for equality in the work place but we need to take that equality beyond work if we're not going to be a bunch of hypocrites - and ladies, that means when it comes to going out on dates its time to pay up and share the costs. But regardless of who pays I just don't think a night out should be a big financial burden. It's really important for couples to spend time doing fun things together! I'd love to say I'm able to keep all my date nights under $40 but the reality is that is really hard, but it can be done. So without further adieu, here's the first of hopefully many $40 (and under) dates.
One of the best ways to save on dating is to think outside the going out to dinner box. Especially if you're like me and you prefer dressing up and going to nice places. So instead of dinner, why not a dessert and drinks date? Mos…
