On Wednesdays We Wear Pink!

Happy Wednesday y'all! Are you wearing pink? I am.

Can you believe Mean Girls came out today 10 years ago? That makes us old y'all. I know the first time watching this movie was with my sorority sisters at a beach retreat but I can't even tell you how many times I've watched it since then, let's just say a lot. Some of the stars of that movie have done really well, others have kinda disappeared, and some well, not so much. But I'm not really one for discussing celebrities so in honor of the 10 year anniversary I have 10 lessons that I learned from Mean Girls, so listen up biotches . . . .

1. You can only wear your hair in a ponytail once a week

Ok, so the "mean girls" might be a little image obsessed but in general I like the idea of not dressing casual too often. At most offices jeans are  only allowed once a week which is also a mean girls fashion rule. There's nothing wrong with being a little casual once in a while but if you're looking to reflect an image of polish and poise don't make it your regular thing.

2. Never dumb yourself down for a guy

Cady almost loses her chance with Aaron because she pretends to suck at math, and that's just dumb. True story: I went on a date with a guy who asked me if I knew that in a corporate liquidation bond holders receive a distribution with precedence over stock holders. My answer: yes. This guy was apparently trying to be super impressive with this fancy (not really) knowledge and got pretty upset about this, but as I pointed out I have a Master's in Finance so yes I'm aware of the pro and cons of various forms of investment. It was our 2nd and last date. Point being yes ladies, there will be guys out there who can't handle you being smart but those aren't the kind of guys worth your time.

3. Don't write things down you don't want coming back to you

Always talk face to face first if you have a problem with someone. I know lots of people, myself included, who sent a bad email that should have never been sent. It's ok to get mad, get hurt and maybe be a little crazy but cool off and then approach the issue because once you put something negative out there it's there and it has to be addressed.

4. Don't say mean things over the phone

You never know who is listening or recording you. It's sad but true (side eye to Donald Sterling). So again, talk face to face. On that note, be carefully gossiping in public, you never know who knows who.

5. Butter does in fact have carbs

Shortcuts really don't create long term positive results. At almost 30 I'm still trying to accept this one when it comes to dieting vs healthy lifestyle choices. It would be nice to say oh, I'm going to only eat these protein bars for a month and viola meet my goals but that's just not how the body works.

6. The real you is always better than you trying to be someone else

Probably one of my favorite scenes is when Regina has holes cut in her tank top, wears it anyway and sparks a trend. Everyone looks so silly you can't help but laugh out loud. But then at prom Cady gives her moving speech about everyone looking so great - when the girls focus on being the best version of themselves rather than copying the popular girl is when they really look, and more importantly feel, good. Ok, and a little piece of the prom queen crown doesn't hurt.

7. If you focus on negativity too much it will become a part of you

At once point Cady becomes a "mean girl" herself. She spends so much time focused on Regina she becomes just like her. Someone you don't like isn't worth that much of your time and energy because the negativity will grow within your heart and will take you, so don't let it in.

8. Carelessness hurts others

When Cady's party causes her mother's tribal vase to be lost her mother is really upset. As yes, it's not like Cady went and smashed it to pieces  but actions have consequences , sometimes negative ones. And the vase is found but it's not about that, it's about lying to the parents and showing disrespect for their home. A careless action that only takes a moment to make can take a long time to heal, choose your words, and your actions carefully.

9. Girlfriends are awesome, but women can also be a little crazy

In the end, friendship wins but Cady is comparing the rituals of teen girls to animals in the wild all throughout the movie and it's funny because it's true. Love your friends like they deserve to be loved but also watch out for the crazy.

10. You can always reinvent yourself

I know people who are stuck in the idea of who they were in high school - I graduated 12 years ago. That's a long time to hold onto something that may or may not still be true. So what if you were a nerd in high school, or a jock or even a "mean girl". In life we get to move on, become someone different in college or as an adult. Unless you commit a major crime chances are what you did at 16 or even 22 won't make who you are at 30. Youth is the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and become a better person for them.

So, wow lots of deep life lessons from a "silly movie" as some think it is. There's plenty of other good stuff in this movie but these are just 10 things I could think of. So happy anniversary Mean Girls and happy we wear pink day to all you you.

Love ya! Bye.

Sensible Portions

I'm Sometimes you have to recognize your strengths and when it's time to outsource . For me a healthy lifestyle is not a strength. I love the idea of eating small healthy meals and working out everyday but then I get hangry and eat anything in sight. Or I have a busy weekend and don't have time to meal prep, and then I'm screwed for the week and one bad week turns into a bad month, and a bad year and a decade of gaining weight. So, when a sorority sister posted a meal plan she had found success with I was very interested. Shaun and I tried a similar program last year but it was very expensive ($170 for one person for 5 days) That's a great investment if you need to lose 10 or 20 lbs but when you have a lot to lose you need a long term plan that is viable from a time, nutrition and financial aspect.
Long term it's still pricey but I was very impressed with the value and results of sensible portions and decided to give it a try. Like most meal plans the plan is …

Customize your clothing with Eshakti

Have you ever seen an article of clothing and loved it but thought oh, if only it had sleeves, or was longer - as someone who is 5’10 this happens to me ALL THE TIME! Allow me to introduce you to eShakti - the fashion site that allows you to customize your clothes.

eShakti has hundreds of styles to choose from so picking a piece is honestly the hardest part. I selected this blue and white ruffle stripe dress thinking it would be perfect for spring and summer - I love wearing it now but I can’t wear it to the beach in May! Once you select your item you either enter your size or measurements and enter your height. You can then buy the item as it or pay a $9.95 styling fee to select the neckline, sleeves and length to your liking. My dress was above the knee in the default style but I thought a below the knee length would be perfect and I was not disappointed!
Most pieces are under $100 making this an affordable and approachable way to have a unique and custom piece in your closet. Th…

Please keep in mind this is an old post and my photo quality is not great. Please feel free to read and enjoy but I do want to let you know that as the years have passed I have taken a more proactive approach with my skin care and I do not get frequent peels. If you'd like to see my modern approach to skincare check out some of my other beauty posts and I'd love for you to connect with me on Instagram to keep up with my latest and greatest recommendations.

I got my first peel years ago - a mild Glycolic peel added onto my fac…

Memphis Fashion Week Emerging Designers Preview

April doesn't just mean spring in Memphis is also means fashion! Tickets are completely sold out for this year's Memphis Fashion Week but what I love about MFW is the inclusiveness - the Trunk Show is open to the public Friday and Saturday and Saturday at 11am there will be a free designer talk also open to the public.   MFW always closes with the Emerging Designer Project Runway Show and it has become quite the popular event - you don't typically think of Memphis as being a fashion hub but there is a great amount of talent and creativity here! This year Memphis Fashion Design Network (the parent organization of MFW) hosted a preview of the emerging designer works. While it's always fun to see these works of art come to life on the runway it was really cool to see these pieces up close too - and of course to be able to share with y'all! A crowded party isn't the ideal spot for my best photography but I hope y'all enjoy seeing these designs and if you'…

Memphis Fashion Week 2019 Featured Designers

This year's Memphis Fashion Week (MFW) really emphasized Memphis Fashion and I couldn't love it more if I tried. The Friday Featured Designer Runway show featured four local Memphis designers and one regional designer. I tried to get a photo of each look but sometimes the models move before the shutter snaps or the pic just doesn't come out good but I hope this (pic heavy) post gives you an idea of all the talent in Memphis and the south! Tanganika by Tangie Tangie uses cotton African prints to make beautiful, colorful clothing. I think these items are just so beautifully made and I love the details. I'll admit that in our politically sensitive world I worry that if I wore such a print it could come off as cultural appropriation instead of appreciation but seeing these looks on the runway has really reminded me that my goal this year it to step outside my fashion comfort zone.
