Grocery Challenge: Kroger

This past weekend we did our shopping at Kroger. Kroger basically has a grocery monopoly on Memphis as it is our only traditional style grocery store. Which is why perhaps other speciality chains are popping up in our city.

Anyway, here's the haul:

We spent $91.45 and unlike Sprouts this covered everything we need for the week (except the 2nd gallon of milk - we never get two at once)

Most meals will cover 3 to 4 servings allowing Shaun to take leftovers for lunch (I prefer fruit and oatmeal during the day)

Pot Roast with Potatoes and Veggies - 4 meals

Can you tell we are meat and potato kind of people? I was really trying to give Kroger a winner with this meal since it's an established favorite in our house. The roast alone was $19!!! Honestly, we were both disappointed, even with a seasoning packet added this didn't have much flavor nor was as tender as the one from Sprouts two weeks earlier. I honestly feel like we would have been better off going to the nearby western theme "steakhouse" that offers two for $14.99 meals Monday - Wednesday, at least we wouldn't have had to fool with dishes.

Sweet Bourbon Pork Tenderloin with potatoes and Veggies

Chicken with cheddar rice and brocolli

Parmesan Pasta and Shrimp

Grilled Cheese (this is what happens when Shaun participates in the shopping, a meal with no nutritional value gets added in)

So from a spending / meal viewpoint Kroger is the better value. But we'll have to wait for the week to go by to make the final determination.

  1. I'm confused. If you spent $80 at Sprouts and got 4 dinners and spent $91 at Kroger for 5 meals (one of which was grilled cheese sandwiches), how is Kroger the better deal? It seems like you spent an extra $11 for grilled cheese. What am I missing?

    1. Hi Renaissance, thanks for stopping by! In the cost calculations you're missing the shrimp purchase. At Sprouts I got a beef, pork, chicken and carb/cheese as the entrees, at Kroger we also got a beef, pork, chicken and carb/cheese entree (this was not on purpose, we're just creatures of habit) but added on a 5th meal of shrimp - which was actually $10.99. So for the same $80 the meat portions are larger and will yield more servings and I got my personal stash of fruit.

    2. I see. That makes more sense to me now. Thanks. I'm really enjoying these grocery posts, btw. It's something I've wondered about but not taken the time to figure out for myself.

And so it begins

I've been working on this post for awhile but I wasn't quite ready to share it with the world. Some of you might still be wondering why I'm sharing. Well we're married a year now, we bought the big house in the good school district so I know you're wondering - when are they going to have a baby. So now you don't have to feel awkward asking if we're trying to conceive (TTC) the answer is no - well not yet at least. Right now we're on a plan I'm referring to as pre-TTC.
My Pre-TTC tools - tracking planner, thermometer and prescription  It's awkward to be honest - there's lots of online groups and forums for women TTC but no one really talks about pre TTC, it's like you just wake up and one day say ok, we're now ready to have a baby. But as I've learned, it's really not that simple. I've had conversations with a very few people about this on one hand here I am bitching about how this is something that isn't talked abou…

Gratitude Challenge

So this month I was all set to do the whole gratitude challenge thing  but as I started to think of what things I might post about I started to think maybe this isn't the best idea. Is it possible to do a gratitude challenge and come up with 30 unique expressions of gratitude without humble bragging? My day to day life is pretty boring and we don't have cute kids that provide a constant supply of little daily antidotes to be grateful about and I know that this isn't about picking up 30 material possessions  in my life and posting about them. But even when I look past the "stuff" in my life and more behind emotional and non tangible things it still just doesn't feel right - does the friend with the sick kid really need my post about how #blessed I am with good health popping up in her feed? I think not.
Maybe I'm being Debbie downer on what's supposed to be a lighthearted and fun social media engagement but I just can't get my heart into it becau…

Shelby Jewel

I really wanted to have this post up yesterday but if you've been following my instagram stories at all you will have seen that I remembered this weekend that I still needed to refinish my dining room table if I had any hopes of using it for Thanksgiving (and yes, I am on track to finish it tonight, Woohoo!) So here I am a day late but not a dollar short with a post on some fun fashion finds. Last week I attended the preview party for a new online boutique started by Memphis Blogger Shelby Jewel. Shelby has beautiful taste so I knew I was interested in checking out her boutique. Nothing says welcome like a glass of Champagne! Racks of beautiful tops Swoon worthy Jackets Pretty Tassel Earrings So, I'll admit I was very nervous about this event, Shelby is very small and most boutique sizes are small as well - I am not. But, I really wanted to see the pretty things and thought hey, you never know. As I predicted clothing is available in S - L but I have found that with some bou…

Thanksgiving Essentials

Next week is Thanksgiving and I am soooo excited! Thanksgiving is basically all of my favorite things in one day - chilling in pjs watching the parade, delicious food, family time, and shopping! For the past few years we have gone our for Thanksgiving because the condo was not wheelchair friendly for my grandmother and my dad moved out of town but this year we're going back to having Thanksgiving at home and while I'm sad we won't have my grandma this year I am excited to be cooking the Thanksgiving meal again. In my humble opinion Thanksgiving is no time for healthy eating and since everyone has their own favorites I say bring on the carbs - this is what my menu this year will be: 1. Champagne Turkey 2. Stuffing 3. Green Bean Casserole 4. Sweet Potato Casserole 5. Mashed Potatoes 6. Peas 7. Corn Soufflé 8. Broccoli 9. Pillsbury Crescent Rolls 10. Cranberry sauce (from the can of course, I hate it but my family tells me this is the only way to have it) 11. Pie 12. Ma…

Vi Peel

Hello! So I got my first Vi Peel which I was super excited about. Since the Botox post was popular I figure y'all would like this too. Besides, it's well established I'm beyond any sense of privacy or shame here.
I got my first peel years ago - a mild Glycolic peel added onto my facial when I turned 23. Then a few years ago I went to a friends Botox party, I was 26 and scared of Botox at the time but I got a TCA peel and liked the results but not the price tag so I bought the solution online and started doing them myself. All was fine and dandy at home until I stopped following the instructions, opps. The peel was supposed to be applied with a cotton pad , I had the genius idea this past march to brush it on. It dripped and got too deep into my skin resulting on uneven peeling.
So I had to wait for that mess to heal before I could get it professionally fixed. I decided to switch to the vi peel because its supposed to be better and hurts less, tca literally produces tear…
