Best of 2017 Fashion

Hello 2018! I'm getting a slow start to the year since the first week of the month is always my busiest at my day job but before I getting fully into 2018 I'm sharing the best of 2017 today. Last year I placed a strong emphasis on refocusing my wardrobe and I'm pretty pleased how the year went. Next week I'll be sharing my list of classic pieces I plan on adding this year but I first wanted to share some of my favorite pieces from the past year because you'll certainty see them this year. Some of my exact pieces are no longer available but I'm linking some very similar items in both straight and plus sizes in case you want to build your closet classic collection with me.

The whole closet makeover started when I realized that I was lacking a versatile black dress so that was a top priority for me, I soon realized though that a really need a cool weather and warm weather black dress. I wound up seeing a casual cotton swing dress last summer and it would up being perfect for a variety of occasions although admittedly not for dressy or professional attire occasions - perhaps one really does need several black dresses. Maybe my search for the perfect black dress continues but I really do like a simple black swing dress and at the price point it's hard to argue against it.

If I had to list one item beyond the black dress that's a closet must have it would be a Chambray shirt. It's such a versatile style - comfortable yet with some structure - and it goes with pretty much anything. I actually prefer to wear my chambray top with skirts but I do love how they look with some black skinny pants and boots.
One purchase that took me by surprise last year was my yellow skirt. I wound up getting a ton of wear out of it and I love that it's a classic shape in an unexpected color. I don't see myself wearing this in the winter but one piece that can work for spring, summer and fall looks is pretty good in my opinion. Come warmer weather expect to see this back in my rotation.

Even though I wanted a black dress that I could wear to dressier events I decided that I wanted a non black dress that would be good for nice events but still not fussy and this the So Fancy City Chic dress fit the bill - in fact most of the product reviews online indicate like me most buyer wore this dress to a wedding. City Chic is offered in size 12 and up but the style is available from multiple designers.

Finally, I added some lovely shirt dresses to my closet this year. These dresses are cool and comfortable and make great transition pieces from summer to fall. My dresses were custom made by Memphis designer Beg and Borrow but I've linked a few similar styles if you're looking for an off the rack option.

So there you have it, my favorite pieces of 2017. I expect 2018 to be just as fashionable and just as fabulous and hope yours will be too!

Art and Fashion with The Dixon Gallery and Gardens

To me, fashion has always been a form of art - there's the art from the creator but also art from the wearer in how they style the piece. Because I love the art of fashion so very much it should come as no surprise that I also love more traditional art. I think a lot of people think of museums as being stuffy places but one thing I think is so wonderful about museums is that whether your family has a gallery named after them or you bought a general admission ticket it gives us all the same exposure to art and its beauty - the Mona Lisa after all smiles no more for the Louvre's benefactors than she does for the thousands of tourists that come to see her each year. In Memphis we have several wonderful museums and places to see art but the place I frequent the most is The Dixon Gallery and Gardens. I have been a member of The Dixon for over 10 years because not only is it a place of paintings on the wall and beautiful gardens it is a place of gathering with their many social ev…

Sensible Portions

I'm Sometimes you have to recognize your strengths and when it's time to outsource . For me a healthy lifestyle is not a strength. I love the idea of eating small healthy meals and working out everyday but then I get hangry and eat anything in sight. Or I have a busy weekend and don't have time to meal prep, and then I'm screwed for the week and one bad week turns into a bad month, and a bad year and a decade of gaining weight. So, when a sorority sister posted a meal plan she had found success with I was very interested. Shaun and I tried a similar program last year but it was very expensive ($170 for one person for 5 days) That's a great investment if you need to lose 10 or 20 lbs but when you have a lot to lose you need a long term plan that is viable from a time, nutrition and financial aspect.
Long term it's still pricey but I was very impressed with the value and results of sensible portions and decided to give it a try. Like most meal plans the plan is …

Plum Paper Designs - Fitness Insert

I know I say this every year but this year I also want to make wellness / fitness a priority. It's hard for me to get in the mindset of making it important because quite frankly it's not something my doctor gets onto me about. But during 2015 I've been making a switch to a more natural lifestyle and that has put fitness back at my top of mind. So, for $4.50 I got the fitness section added onto my Plum Paper Designs Planner
Here's what's inside:

A monthly layout for 12 months
Weight Loss Tracker at the Back

I LOVE the monthly layout! First off, having a hydration tracker for each day is going to be so nice. I also love the idea of holding myself accountable to writing down an activity (or excuse) each day. Most of all I love the recognition that each month will have different goals and includes some note sections ; one thing I hear a lot form people who successfully got fit was that they had some kind of tracking and were able to go back…

20 Rules for Modern Feminine Style

One of the things I love about the digital age is the ability to connect with others! I recently got a great idea from a youtuber I follow to make a list of 20 "rules" that define my lifestyle and I really loved this idea and thought not only would this be a good exercise for myself but a good topic to share with y'all. So, obviously you do you and wear whatever you want but these are my guidelines for my modern feminine without breaking the bank aesthetic.
1. Focus on pieces with wear ability beyond one season, don't get sucked into too many trends. For example, gingham will always be wearable for summer, plaid for fall, sweaters for winter and floral for spring - but get pieces with classic cuts so you can wear them year after year. For example, a gingham shirt dress is classic, a gingham top with bell sleeves will look dated the second that shape is out. 2. Don't be afraid to spend a little more for quality timeless pieces - a cashmere sweater, a great blac…

What’s in the bag : Toiletry Essentials to Pack for Your Next Trip

I’ve  been traveling so much lately so I’ve pretty much got packing down to a science. Planning for a trip can be stressful so I’m here to make it a little easier for you and talk about the necessities, today were specifically talking about what’s in the toiletry bag. As a special treat I have teamed up with Smile Brilliant for a giveaway at the end of this post!!! When thinking about necessities I first think about the things I don’t need - hotels always have shampoo, conditioner and a hairdryer so I never bring my own to save space.  I then think about what items I use at home that I can go without for the week vs. what I use everyday. I also try to think about  products that are good for multipurpose; facial oil is a great example as I use it for a makeup remover at night , a moisturizer in the morning and I also use a small amount on the ends of my hair. Through this I’ve been able to narrow it down to only ten items.
1. Hairbrush

2. Deodorant

3. Toothbrush

4. Toothpaste

5. Facia…
