Our Homebuying journey and the mortgage process

As I mentioned in my last finance post - more transparency in this area is something I'm looking to provide more of to y'all and since I started off with my argument for why I personally believe homeownership is a solid financial choice today I'm talking more in detail about our personal journey.

Just because home ownership is a good idea doesn't mean it's good idea for everyone. While there are formal qualifications you'd go through with the mortgage process I feel like there is a place you should be in in your life before event thinking about homeownership:

1. Have an emergency fund - typically at least $1,000 starting off but certainly more is better. I think its hard to set a given amount because everyone has a different financial situation but enough that paying an insurance deductible or replacing an appliance could be done so with cash. Life happens, if something unexpected came up and would give you trouble making your mortgage payment you're not…

What to Wear on your Carnival Cruise

Everyone needs a little escape now and then, don't you think? I know y'all have been eager for the details so today I'm sharing all the who, what , where and what I wore from our recent cruise. This past cruise was my 6th and 5th with carnival so while I'm not a diamond level pro cruiser I'm no novice to cruising and I've certainly learned a thing or two on what to pack and what to leave at home. Over the past few years I have cruised on the Splendor, Dream and Magic and while there are slight changes and differences each of these ships has the same layout so after cruising on the Splendor in 2015 I've been able to walk aboard and know my way around. Currently, Magic sails out of Port Canaveral Florida and we drove the entire way from Memphis. On the way there our goal the first day was to make it into Florida and then we'd just stop when we got tired; we wound up stopping for the night two hours from the port and felt like we could have made it the en…

The Journey

Last week I had the best of intentions of staying active on social media - I was going to post everyday and make all sort of sweet and supportive comments on other peoples pictures and be inspired and inspired others. Instead I wound up facing terrible wifi and screaming at my phone until an unrelated incident made me too sick to care. And while I could have done without the getting sick part and I'm being punished by the instagram algorithm gods this week with super low visibility on my posts but I can't help but feel like for me as a person a week to disconnect was just what I needed and it ended too soon. I don't feel like I need ongoing treatment or therapy but from time to time I fall into a funk and lately that's where I've been - hanging out in a pit of not enough-ness. As a plus size woman society is always going to tell me I'm not pretty enough , thin enough, or healthy enough and for the most part that really doesn't bother me because I feel lik…

Social Media and Spending (Is your favorite blogger a Carrie or a Miranda)

Everyone here is old enough to remember Sex and the City right? I feel like it's mainstream in our pop culture enough that I'm not dating myself too much with my title reference but if you're confused trust me, it will all make sense by the end of this post. One thing I always hesitate to write about is finances, but the reality is its something I personally focus heavily on and so if I'm going to be authentic here (which is my always my goal of course) its really a topic I can't ignore. And I know there's some fellow bloggers reading this now thinking oh girl, no - talking money is no ones business but hear me out - fashion and lifestyle bloggers pretty much tell people what to do with their money with EVERY SINGLE POST so while I'm not saying ever blogger should have to share a screen shot of their bank statement I am pointing out that how one spends their money is highly personal indeed so if bloggers are going to talk buy this, oh girl it's so wor…

Shop Memphis - Saddle Creek

In my house April kicks off gift season - there's my MIL's birthday and hubby's birthday in April, Mother's Day and my Dad's birthday in May, Father's Day in June and then finally after all that shopping for other people my birthday is in July. Between working full time and blogging on the weekends the last thing I need when looking for the perfect gift is to run all over town so I really like going to The Shops Saddle Creek in Germantown - it doesn't hurt that they have lots of stores I like too. Saddle Creek is somewhere I've been shopping since high school and the collection of stores seems to only get better with time. vomFASS is a really fun and unique store, walking past in the past I thought it was simply and olive oli and vinegar store but there's so much more - wines, liqueurs , whiskey, and beauty products  oh my! Also, everything is available to be sampled in store so you know exactly what you're getting before you buy. Oh, when I sa…
