Life Advice with NFL Official Sarah Thomas

I'm what you might refer to as a casual football fan - I didn't even go to a college with a football team and it's honestly never going to ruin my day if my team loses. But I do enjoy going to games and watching them at home (even though after all these years my husband still has to explain things from me from time to  time, haha!). I remember watching when Sarah Thomas joined the NFL and thinking - wow she's the only woman on an entire field of men, you go girl! So when Sarah was scheduled to speak at the Memphis advertising association I had to go - even though I'm not a member.

The lunch was actually held in the media box overlooking the field at The Liberty Bowl and I must admit it was a pretty nice view. Maybe if I blog about football more I can score a media pass - kidding sort of ,UofM call me! When we (I went with a female leader at my company) walked in Sarah was right there mingling and came up to say hello. Honestly I didn't realize it was her at first because I didn't expect her to just be mingling but also y'all - she's tall (she looks so short on tv but it makes since you know football players can be big guys). After everyone went through the buffet and settled in Sarah started her presentation.

I don't want to share Sarah's entire story here -not because it wasn't super interesting - because I hope if you have the opportunity to hear her speak you will do so. But, I will share the more motivational speaker aspects of her presentation which was titled Simple Math.  Sarah started out by sharing what she calls quotes to live by:

Be Yourself because everyone else is already taken

Don't let people drive you crazy when you know it's walking distance

A successful person is someone who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him or her - David Brinkley

Sarah shared her story and how these quotes applied to challenges she faced. She also shared some of her own "Sarahisms:

Don't do it to prove anyone wrong, that list will never end

Do it because you love it, not for the recognition - the recognition will come

The way you carry yourself will dictate the way you are treated

Being first means nothing - be inspiring

Don't Do it for the recognition

The title of the talk was simple math because at the end Sarah went over something I'm sure a lot of you have seen before how if you apply a number to every word of the alphabet you can get some values to various words and see that being LAZY (64) will get you a failing grade, being CONFIDENT (78) is better but still not enough, EXCUSSES (96) can get you close to the top but not quite there, LEADERSHIP (97) and HARDWORK (98) will also get you pretty close but it is ATTITUDE (100) that will get you to the top. Also - being MOTIVATED (129) and DETERMINATION (147) will get you further.

Honestly. I've just been a point in my life lately where I've been discouraged and just needed to hear these things so this talk really spoke to me. Afterwards I was able to get a photo with Sarah and thank her for the fabulous talk. I'm so glad I went to the lunch and I'm looking forward to seeing Sarah continue to succeed with the NFL - Sarah did mention that there are several women in the NFL's training program now so I'm looking forward to seeing more women on the field breaking through the ceiling she shattered.

Sensible Portions

I'm Sometimes you have to recognize your strengths and when it's time to outsource . For me a healthy lifestyle is not a strength. I love the idea of eating small healthy meals and working out everyday but then I get hangry and eat anything in sight. Or I have a busy weekend and don't have time to meal prep, and then I'm screwed for the week and one bad week turns into a bad month, and a bad year and a decade of gaining weight. So, when a sorority sister posted a meal plan she had found success with I was very interested. Shaun and I tried a similar program last year but it was very expensive ($170 for one person for 5 days) That's a great investment if you need to lose 10 or 20 lbs but when you have a lot to lose you need a long term plan that is viable from a time, nutrition and financial aspect.
Long term it's still pricey but I was very impressed with the value and results of sensible portions and decided to give it a try. Like most meal plans the plan is …

Plum Paper Designs - Fitness Insert

I know I say this every year but this year I also want to make wellness / fitness a priority. It's hard for me to get in the mindset of making it important because quite frankly it's not something my doctor gets onto me about. But during 2015 I've been making a switch to a more natural lifestyle and that has put fitness back at my top of mind. So, for $4.50 I got the fitness section added onto my Plum Paper Designs Planner
Here's what's inside:

A summary sheet at the front:

A monthly layout for 12 months
Weight Loss Tracker at the Back

I LOVE the monthly layout! First off, having a hydration tracker for each day is going to be so nice. I also love the idea of holding myself accountable to writing down an activity (or excuse) each day. Most of all I love the recognition that each month will have different goals and includes some note sections ; one thing I hear a lot form people who successfully got fit was that they had some kind of tracking and were able to go back…

20 Rules for Modern Feminine Style

One of the things I love about the digital age is the ability to connect with others! I recently got a great idea from a youtuber I follow to make a list of 20 "rules" that define my lifestyle and I really loved this idea and thought not only would this be a good exercise for myself but a good topic to share with y'all. So, obviously you do you and wear whatever you want but these are my guidelines for my modern feminine without breaking the bank aesthetic.
1. Focus on pieces with wear ability beyond one season, don't get sucked into too many trends. For example, gingham will always be wearable for summer, plaid for fall, sweaters for winter and floral for spring - but get pieces with classic cuts so you can wear them year after year. For example, a gingham shirt dress is classic, a gingham top with bell sleeves will look dated the second that shape is out. 2. Don't be afraid to spend a little more for quality timeless pieces - a cashmere sweater, a great blac…

Lauren James Warehouse Sale Haul

Hello Friends! I know many of y'all kept up with my Lauren James warehouse sale journey over the weekend and if you're anything like me you like following along even if you couldn't make it yourself. When Lauren James announced the warehouse sale I was super excited but not sure I could make it work - it was short notice, a five hour drive and I'd already spent my June spending money. Luckily I have a good hubby who recognizes that sometimes you just need something fun in your life and was ok not only making the trip but with me borrowing from ourselves against my July spending money. Since this is the last warehouse sale Lauren James plans on holding I really didn't want the opportunity to slip by.
Warehouse sales can serve many purposes for a business - as a way to move excess inventory, create buzz and excitement for the brand, reward the most loyal brand fans by giving them access to great deal (which also puts more product into the hands of those most excite…

Top Ten Trends for Fall and What to Buy Now

I received several questions about the Nordstrom sale and this year I really felt like I would bite the bullet and make a post with recommendations and while I see myself always browsing the sale to see what's up and I'm not closed to doing a round up post in the future after reviewing this year's sale I just can't find the patience to put an entire post together. I always want this blog to be a place where I am authentic and real and not just a place to spew out what's popular but rather what trends speak to me. And I hate to disappoint people , I'm very flattered that there have been people to reach out and ask about my recommendations but I don't want to recommend things just for the sake of recommending things. I prefer to shop in season and with the weather in Memphis I just won't be wearing fall items until late October. Plus, a lot of the items I saw in the sale I liked are similar to items I already own and I don't need to be buying duplic…
