How to enjoy your patio in style

I have a confession - I have two tables for dining inside my home and right now neither is suitable for sitting down and having a meal at. Between all the travel and every single weekend for the past few months being filling with either heading out on a trip, coming home from a trip or catching up on laundry and packing for the next trip eating at home and keeping an neat house just hasn't been a priority. So the kitchen table has turned into a grocery staging area and kitchen odds and ends and the dining table has become my package receiving area and suitcase staging.
So with the weather suitable for dining al fresco I was thrilled when the folks at Full Beauty Brands reached out about creating an outdoor oasis for our back patio.

My husband Shaun does a pretty good job of mowing the lawn on a regular basis and we have a service to spray to keep the grass green and the weeds at bay but despite our best efforts the grass will not grow right around our patio because the roof shades it from any sun exposure. Looking at a foot of dirt isn't the most appealing sight so the first step was to create a barrier between the dirt boarder and our patio area - for this we used a planter box.
It took two large bags of soil to fill the planter and we selected three annuals to plant. Selecting annuals gives us the flexibility to change the look in the future but right now we wanted some fun pops of color. I selected pink because I already had a small outdoor rug in pink I knew would be perfect for the set up and did a purple flower in the middle just to add some variety. In total to fill the planter we sent $50 on top of the planter cost.

Next came the table set up - this bistro table set as the look of wrought iron but is actually a study plastic material so it's lightweight and easy to move around when we have changing needs for entertaining. Out porch is north facing so we would turn the chairs to enjoy a sunset dinner or glass of wine.

During the summer we tend to eat a lot of salads and lighter items so a melamine salad set was perfect to complete the set up. I love melamine dishes for casual dining because they are sturdy but light and super easy to clean.

Of course, what kind of southerner would sit on their porch without a glass of sweet tea? The table is just the right size for everything we need for light summer dinners and back porch sweet tea sippin.

I'll be sharing more with our fun new setup so stay tuned for some of my favorite salad and sweet tea recipes but I hope this post inspires you to create your own little outdoor oasis.

Sensible Portions

I'm Sometimes you have to recognize your strengths and when it's time to outsource . For me a healthy lifestyle is not a strength. I love the idea of eating small healthy meals and working out everyday but then I get hangry and eat anything in sight. Or I have a busy weekend and don't have time to meal prep, and then I'm screwed for the week and one bad week turns into a bad month, and a bad year and a decade of gaining weight. So, when a sorority sister posted a meal plan she had found success with I was very interested. Shaun and I tried a similar program last year but it was very expensive ($170 for one person for 5 days) That's a great investment if you need to lose 10 or 20 lbs but when you have a lot to lose you need a long term plan that is viable from a time, nutrition and financial aspect.
Long term it's still pricey but I was very impressed with the value and results of sensible portions and decided to give it a try. Like most meal plans the plan is …

Plum Paper Designs - Fitness Insert

I know I say this every year but this year I also want to make wellness / fitness a priority. It's hard for me to get in the mindset of making it important because quite frankly it's not something my doctor gets onto me about. But during 2015 I've been making a switch to a more natural lifestyle and that has put fitness back at my top of mind. So, for $4.50 I got the fitness section added onto my Plum Paper Designs Planner
Here's what's inside:

A summary sheet at the front:

A monthly layout for 12 months
Weight Loss Tracker at the Back

I LOVE the monthly layout! First off, having a hydration tracker for each day is going to be so nice. I also love the idea of holding myself accountable to writing down an activity (or excuse) each day. Most of all I love the recognition that each month will have different goals and includes some note sections ; one thing I hear a lot form people who successfully got fit was that they had some kind of tracking and were able to go back…

20 Rules for Modern Feminine Style

One of the things I love about the digital age is the ability to connect with others! I recently got a great idea from a youtuber I follow to make a list of 20 "rules" that define my lifestyle and I really loved this idea and thought not only would this be a good exercise for myself but a good topic to share with y'all. So, obviously you do you and wear whatever you want but these are my guidelines for my modern feminine without breaking the bank aesthetic.
1. Focus on pieces with wear ability beyond one season, don't get sucked into too many trends. For example, gingham will always be wearable for summer, plaid for fall, sweaters for winter and floral for spring - but get pieces with classic cuts so you can wear them year after year. For example, a gingham shirt dress is classic, a gingham top with bell sleeves will look dated the second that shape is out. 2. Don't be afraid to spend a little more for quality timeless pieces - a cashmere sweater, a great blac…

Lauren James Warehouse Sale Haul

Hello Friends! I know many of y'all kept up with my Lauren James warehouse sale journey over the weekend and if you're anything like me you like following along even if you couldn't make it yourself. When Lauren James announced the warehouse sale I was super excited but not sure I could make it work - it was short notice, a five hour drive and I'd already spent my June spending money. Luckily I have a good hubby who recognizes that sometimes you just need something fun in your life and was ok not only making the trip but with me borrowing from ourselves against my July spending money. Since this is the last warehouse sale Lauren James plans on holding I really didn't want the opportunity to slip by.
Warehouse sales can serve many purposes for a business - as a way to move excess inventory, create buzz and excitement for the brand, reward the most loyal brand fans by giving them access to great deal (which also puts more product into the hands of those most excite…

Top Ten Trends for Fall and What to Buy Now

I received several questions about the Nordstrom sale and this year I really felt like I would bite the bullet and make a post with recommendations and while I see myself always browsing the sale to see what's up and I'm not closed to doing a round up post in the future after reviewing this year's sale I just can't find the patience to put an entire post together. I always want this blog to be a place where I am authentic and real and not just a place to spew out what's popular but rather what trends speak to me. And I hate to disappoint people , I'm very flattered that there have been people to reach out and ask about my recommendations but I don't want to recommend things just for the sake of recommending things. I prefer to shop in season and with the weather in Memphis I just won't be wearing fall items until late October. Plus, a lot of the items I saw in the sale I liked are similar to items I already own and I don't need to be buying duplic…
