$40 Dates

A series of date night ideas costing $40 or less, published weekly. Although my dates are done in Memphis, TN I aim to share strategies with readers that could be done anywhere and I'm also sharing the monthly Date Box service which is available nationwide.

How It Began

Flashback to fall 2013: I had a really rough couple of weeks at work and wasn't getting a lot of time to spend with the guy I had then been dating for a few months (who is now my husband). To celebrate getting past the rough hump and show appreciation for him putting up with my long hours I was looking for a romantic Friday night date. We got dressed up (not super fancy but nicer than jeans or work clothes) and headed to one of downtown Memphis's "nicer restaurant". The lighting was awful and made me uncomfortable, there was a noisy delivery truck out front the entire time, the food was rushed and mediocre at best. Despite ordering three courses we were in and out in an hour, so much for a nice romantic dinner. The worst part was I was now $120 poorer. I didn't have anything else planned for the night and quite frankly the money for another activity, I was crushed at the date's failure.

The more I thought about it the more upset I became. What if this has been a first date and some guy had taken me there? If the date was over in an hour I would have presumed the guy didn't like me and we would have never seen each other again. What if we had been parents looking for a night out and went through the trouble and expense of getting a sitter just to have a rushed mediocre meal? This is Memphis , Tennessee gosh darn it, while we have many problems the availability of good food and affordable living costs are not on that list. Maybe this unnamed place was having an off night but there are just too many amazing places in this city to be offering out 2nd chances- but the mistake of making such an investment in a 1st chance was mine, and I vowed not to do it again.

As the guy and I continued to date I whined about how it seemed that a couple had to either go to and expensive restaurant or go to a family friendly chain. I just wanted a nice date without crying babies and I didn't want us going broke in the process. But then I remembered a different restaurant downtown: The Majestic Grill, and all of their reasonable price lovely ambiance glory. While sitting there enjoying my flat bread I realized when it came to date planning I was being lazy and defaulting to high price places for romance, but with a little bit of creativity dating didn't have to be so expensive or boring and thus my quest to find $40 dates began.

I share these dates here because I know I'm not the only one,. I share these dates for the couple starting out, for the young and not making so much, for the couple saving for a wedding / house/ baby/ other life achievement, for the parents paying the babysitter, for couple closing in on retirement, for the fiscally conservative, and for any one looking to go outside the box. I'm not saying never go to fine dining establishments, trust me I do, but to borrow a phrase from my dad "going out to eat shouldn't involve taking out a mortgage".

Hello Fresh Review

One problem with our last house was that the kitchen was a little small, but with our new kitchen we really have no excuse to not cook at home. To start us off on the right foot I started a Hello Fresh subscription.

Subscribers get to select from 8 meals on the weekly menu and can get two or four portions of each meal and 3, 4 or 5 meals per box. We get 4 meals and the cost of the box is $10 / portion / meal - so $80. Each menu also features one premium meal  for an extra $5 / portion.
For our first box I'm sharing step by step with two meals here because I don't think just showing one gives a fair overview of the box. Each box comes with the meat individually packaged, the ingredients per meal all in one brown bag and a recipe card that shows pictures, lists out materials needed and provides step by step instructions. It seems like all the meals involve six steps.

The first meal we made was a fish dish.

The first step was to roast the potatoes with oil in the oven.

Saying Goodbye

If we're friends on Facebook than you might have picked up on why I didn't blog last week - my grandmother passed away last Wednesday. I know I said I want to keep this blog focused on specific topics and less emotional one but the reality is I write it and while I have a whole list of topics I had planned on blogging last week and this week I feel like it's just not right. I still have a few "personal" posts up - my one about being motherless and childless had some readership over the past week being that Sunday was Mother's Day - and today I'm going to add one more personal post. As y'all know my husband and I are moving in June and I'm so glad that on our last "social" day together (we saw her several days in the hospital before she passed) we got to show my Grandma our new house. Our current condo isn't very wheelchair friendly so for the past few years we have been going out to eat on holidays and we were really excited to hos…

Summer Beauty

I feel like Memorial Day is really the kickoff to summer but if you want to be technical yesterday was the first day of summer and it got me thinking about how I change up my beauty routine for summer. I know that it's recommended to change up beauty routines seasonally but I find that I can get away with the same routine for fall, spring and winter  - but summer is a different story and I find myself with different needs during the hot and humid Memphis summer months. Here's some of my summer beauty favorites.
Ogx Quenching Sea Mineral Moisturizing Lotion $7.99 I love this lotion because it's not to thick but not watery thin and it does a good job of keeping skin soft and moisturized without being greasy - plus the nice light sea scent is great for this time of year.
Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt $19 This shampoo scrub is great once a week for gently deep cleansing and get hair squeaky clean - I find it really preps hair to accept the moisture o…

Wardrobe Wednesday - Currently Craving

Although my clothing is mostly unpacked and hanging in the closet I still have all my shoes and accessories in boxes and although I purchased a few items in May as part of my Wardrobe Makeover blogging about them is going to have to wait another week. Today though instead of talking about what I have bought I thought I'd share a few items that I'd like to buy.
Society Plus Whimsy Bow Skirt $52.79 I love this skirt so much, which also comes in blush BTW, and I pretty much want to copy the entire look here. This skirt is named after the Whimsy and Wonder blog and the bow and length really matches my style. I feel like I already have a blush skirt so I should get the purple but I also feel like purple is better in fall and winter so I should wait to purchase. Sam Edelman Yumi Heeled Sandal $120 Mules are really in style right now and trend reports indicate this will carry into the fall. I had a nude pump on my wardrobe wish list for the year and I've yet to find one so I tho…

Sephora Play The Iconic Edition

In addition to my regular Play box this month I also received a special edition box exclusively available to Rouge VIB members for $20
This bag features six high end iconic beauty items and a style book. I got it mostly out of curiosity to try the products inside. Here's what's included: La Mer - The Moisturizing Soft Cream $170
This is one of the most famous (and expensive) skin creams in the world. It certainly smells nice and makes the skin feel soft and smooth. For the price point though I'd have to give the full sample jar a try to make a decision because $170 per ounce is a lot of money and I do like the moisturizer I use currently.
Guerlain Radiance Face Primer $74
Ok, so here's where I have a problem with this product - if I'm using an expensive moisturizer to give me "natural radiance" than why do I need a $74 primer to give me radiance? This goes on very smooth and does give a nice soft radiance but I feel like there are other products out there…
