Top Ten Trends for Fall and What to Buy Now

I received several questions about the Nordstrom sale and this year I really felt like I would bite the bullet and make a post with recommendations and while I see myself always browsing the sale to see what’s up and I’m not closed to doing a round up post in the future after reviewing this year’s sale I just can’t find the patience to put an entire post together.

I always want this blog to be a place where I am authentic and real and not just a place to spew out what’s popular but rather what trends speak to me. And I hate to disappoint people , I’m very flattered that there have been people to reach out and ask about my recommendations but I don’t want to recommend things just for the sake of recommending things. I prefer to shop in season and with the weather in Memphis I just won’t be wearing fall items until late October. Plus, a lot of the items I saw in the sale I liked are similar to items I already own and I don’t need to be buying duplicated. So I hope if you were looking for recommendations you’ll understand why its just not for me this year.
What I do want to talk about though are my fall fashion predictions. While I don’t buy my whole seasonal wardrobe in advance of the season I do like to get an idea of the things I might be interested in so if I see something for a great price I can grab it. If you do shop the Nordstrom sale than these are the types of pieces I’d recommend you buy – but to be honest there’s lots of great sales going on right now so you can probably find many of these things at other retailers if they’re not in your closet already.

1. Leopard

I don’t think leopard has gone out of style since last fall but it’s certainty coming in hot again for fall 2019. I already have a leopard skirt but I recently got a dress as well. I love it because it’s cotton so I can wear it even when it’s still warm.

2. Rust

I’m not sure how I feel about this one – rust is in the orange color family and I’m not crazy about orange but I do own one rust colored sweater, Unless this trend absolutely explodes I’ll probably stick to the one sweater I already own because it’s soft and cozy and I don’t mid wearing it on repeat.

3. Jackets

I feel like this is a no brainer for fall. I could wear my denim jacket all day everyday but I am glad that I grabbed a green utility style jacket earlier this year as well.

4. Stripe Sweaters

We saw these in style last fall and the trend has changed by carried into each season since – in the fall it was long sleeve crew neck sweaters, then we saw the rainbow cardigans and now it’s the rainbow kimono. I missed out on this trend last year and only have the pastel kimono right now so this is one item that I do plan on purchasing for fall.

5. Boots

Boots are another item that are a no brainer for fall IMO. Both booties and tall boots have been in style the past couple of years so this is an area where I really don’t thing you can go wrong. I am hoping this is the year I finally find a pair of OTK boots I love.

6. Midi Length

I am so excited about this one! Midi has slowly been making a comeback in 2019 but fall is looking to be the season of the Midi and I am here for it.

7. Plaid Blazers

This is something I regret not buying last year – from what I can tell this year’s styles look very similar to last year so this is one where I recommend trying to find one on sale first before buying this years slightly altered model.

8. Floral

Florals aren’t just for spring anymore! I feel like we started to see this trend hit last fall and I’m glad it’s coming back for 2019 since I love a good floral print. I already have several fall colored floral items so I’m not looking for anything for this trend but I’m also always open to a new dress.

9. Long Cardigans

I don’t mind long cardigans but I’m not the biggest fan so I’ll probably skip buying something in this trend this year. I already have a long gray cardigan and that’s enough for me.

10. Hats

I love hats but hats don’t seem to love me. Specifically felt wide brimmed hats in neutral colors seem to be what’s in for fall 2019. Since this is purely a weekend item I didn’t want to spend too much money on this trend last year but I could never find a good one for under $20 so I’m starting my search early this year.
As you look for your fall trend items it’s important to think about if you want to be super “in season” or you want something that can carry into future years. For example, while leopard skirts are going to be appropriate for fall a leopard midi skirt is going to look really on trend. My skirt is knee length and I’m not bothered by that. In general I try to avoid items that have multiple trends in one piece knowing that will make the piece look dated next year.
I wish you the best in finding your fall trends and I hope that by starting to think about fall now you can score some great deals. But don’t stress about it too much – it’s still summer after all and you still have plenty of time for sundresses and shorts.
